RESTON, Va. — A new survey of vacationers conducted by the RV Industry Association found 15.3 million Americans plan to travel in RVs between Thanksgiving and New Year’s this year. This represents 12% of the total number of holiday travelers who intend to spend their holidays away from home and the impact of these motorhomes continues to be felt in the economies of the places they visit.
Indeed, increased spending on outdoor recreation – of which the RV industry is a core part – was reaffirmed last week when the US Bureau of Economic Analysis released its report on the Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account (ORSA), showing that the Sector contributed a record $862 billion to the US economy, employing 4.5 million Americans in 2021. This represents a 31% increase in gross output and a 13% increase in jobs compared to 2020.

“These two studies show that the RV industry and its customers are important contributors to the American economy, and there is every indication that they will continue to be,” said James Ashurst, executive vice president of the RV Industry Association. “Growth in the industry is increasingly being driven by younger and more diverse RV buyers, whose purchases are largely motivated by a desire to experience the great outdoors.”
According to the RV Industry Association’s Travel Intent Study, 29% of Millennials and 20% of GenZ leisure travelers plan to stay in an RV over the holidays. Some of them head to warm-weather campgrounds or mountain ski resorts, while others are parked outside their extended families’ homes over the holidays.
“Spending time with friends and family is an integral part of vacations and we know that spending time with friends and family is one of the main reasons people motorhome, whether they are going on vacation together or traveling in their RV for a holiday visit this holiday season,” Ashurst said.
The survey also revealed that finances are a driving reason behind people’s plans to take an upcoming RV trip. With RV travel costing 50% less than comparable hotel and air travel and a third less than hotel and car travel, RV travel is an attractive option for people who want the freedom of travel while controlling their travel expenses.
