The last few years have been a study in appreciating what we have before it’s gone and learning new ways to love, be it in one romantic purpose or simply by taking better care of each other and of ourselves. And although it was written more than 20 years ago, All About Love, by the late, legendary bell hooks, is a fitting guide to the current state of the world. In it, Hooks uses personal experiences to examine society’s lack of caring, compassion, and unity. “The word love is most often defined as a noun, but … we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” she writes.
At a time when we could all use more connection, not to mention more lessons Black Feminism, this testament to Hooks’ continued brilliance should be required reading. And today it’s available on both Bookshop and Amazon. You don’t have to wait for a holiday to gift a copy of All About Love, but it would make an especially nice present valentines day.
