Beardstown to get new sporting items retailer

BEARDSTOWN – A new sports shop will open on the downtown square.

In addition to sporting goods, JAM Ink. Sporting Goods and Merch at 210 Washington St. sells a range of goods, according to owners Jimmy and Amanda Maltby.

Jimmy Maltby is a trainer and has a passion for sports. The couple poured this passion into their business when it was time to turn sporting goods sales into a family business as a hobby.

The name of the shop, JAM Ink., Is derived from the first letter of Jimmy, Amanda and Maltby.

Amanda Maltby said she enjoys handicrafts, including making vinyl cutting and t-shirts for children. Adding sporting goods was always part of Jimmy Maltby’s plan, she said.

In the shop, the Maltbys design and customize clothes and hats. Some of the services include screen printing, digital printing, sublimation, personalization, and embroidery.

With five kids all playing sports, it’s easier than traveling to Springfield or Jacksonville to find something they need, they said.

JAM ink. will sell baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, golf, cheerleading and dance sporting goods, among others.

“It’s all that people can think of,” said Amanda Maltby. The sporting goods for sale depend on the season, she said.

Names can be engraved on ball gloves and there are various hot presses that can be used to press images onto soccer balls, Jimmy Maltby said.

The ink. Side of the business has already developed; the sporting goods page of the store will be ready by winter if everything goes according to plan, the Maltbys said.

Delivery delays, possibly due to the pandemic, have slowed the arrival of printing equipment and goods, Amanda Maltby said.

The delays resulted in the Maltbys receiving supplies from multiple suppliers instead of one, she said.

The shop also has a website,

The Maltbys hope to be ready for a soft opening during the Fall Fun Festival September 24-26.
