Bernal Heights Outside Cinema publicizes 2022 lineup, overlaying three

San Francisco has many free outdoor film screenings, but the longest-running of the series is also the most local. The Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema returns next month for its 19th annual free outdoor film festival and organizers have just announced the full schedule and locations of this quirky festival, which will be held at several different outdoor locations in Bernal Heights for three nights .

All three of this year’s free screenings are collections of short films on September 9th, 10th and 16th. Here are their schedules, lineups and locations for the 2022 Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema.

Season opener: Friday, September 9, 7 p.m

The Season Kickoff Show takes place in the playground at the Bernal Heights Recreation Center and features two and a half hours of short animated films, music videos and documentaries. Show starts at 7pm but doors open at 6pm (lineup here)

Under the Stars: Saturday, September 10, 7 p.m

Precita Park is home to Under the Stars at Precita Park and a series of shorts culminating in playwright Star Finch’s new short film about local multicultural performance ensemble Campo Santos. (list here)

Best of Bernal: Friday, September 16, 7 p.m

Yes, you must hike up the hill to Bernal Heights Park to see Best of Bernal (parking is very limited, walking and public transportation is recommended). But you’re treated to this year’s award winners, including a documentary about a family’s journey through homelessness, the true life story of a falcon trainer, a drama about the Mexican Revolution, and a surprise award winner who has yet to be announced. All performances are free, but performing is not free. The Festival is asking that people contribute to Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema’s GoFundMe Season 19, or if you cannot, there are the volunteer opportunities outlined above.
