MADISON, Wisconsin (WSAW) – The Wisconsin DNR is inviting the public to celebrate nature this winter at one of the many candlelight events taking place throughout Wisconsin. Events begin on January 7th and are scheduled to run through February 25th at various locations.

“Winter candlelight events are among the most popular activities in Wisconsin State’s parks, forests and trails,” said Steve Schmelzer, Parks and Recreation Management Director. “Candlelight activities are a great way to see the parks in a different light. This year we encourage you to invite someone to a candlelight event in 2023 if they’ve never been there before or neither of you have been there before,” Schmelzer said.

These free to inexpensive events typically start around sunset and offer a variety of ways to enjoy the winter scenery after dark, including hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Many will include activities such as campfires, hot chocolate, cider and other refreshments available for sale or donation, and some will have warming accommodation.

These events provide no-obligation opportunities for beginners and can help build connections with other outdoor enthusiasts during the busy time of year.

Although the amount of gear required will vary, warm clothing with layers is recommended for all events. Trekking poles are optional. A headlamp or flashlight is recommended. Contact the property to see what is available for rent and to make reservations.

Most accommodations require a Wisconsin State Park 2023 admission fee or a State Trail Pass unless otherwise noted. State park day passes are available to borrow from participating libraries.

You can share your candlelight adventures on social media using the hashtag #OutWiGo.
