ClearWater Conservancy’s Centered Outdoors program continues its free weekly outdoor adventure series on July 31st and August 3rd at Gray’s Woods Preserve in Patton Township. Guided walks follow trails through the wooded property while information is shared about the property’s ecological importance in relation to the area’s water and wildlife.

Gray’s Woods Preserve is a 149-acre property acquired by Patton Township in 2017 as part of its Open Space program.

In February 2022, ClearWater Conservancy and Patton Township with support from the Hamer Foundation completed a conservation easement to permanently protect the reserve and make sure it’s always open to the public for outdoor recreation.

Gray’s Woods Preserve is located within a core PA natural heritage inventory area known as the Barrens Biological Diversity Area, where a sensitive habitat supports rare plant and animal species.

Below the property is an aquifer recharge area that contributes to the region’s drinking water supply while also supporting fish and wildlife as the water flows towards Spring Creek.

Hiking trails through Gray’s Woods Preserve cover a wide variety of terrain along rare natural features. The reserve is connected to Gray’s Woods Park and State Game Lands 176, commonly referred to as the Scotia Barrens. Gray’s Woods Preserve is managed by Patton Township and is open to the public year-round. The Purple Lizard Scotia Map provides specific details of the area’s history and trail system.

The public is invited to participate in Centered Outdoors guided hikes on July 31 and August 3. At 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Centered Outdoors Adventure Coordinator Bridget Whyte will lead participants on a 2-mile walk around the preserve.

On Sunday at 2:00 p.m., attendees can participate in a wellness activity entitled Nurture Yourself with Nature with Beth Shaha, Master Life Coach. During this time, participants are guided on a multi-sensory, easy walk to increase creativity and discover new possibilities. Please bring a towel or mat for this activity.

To access Gray’s Woods Preserve, go to Gray’s Woods Park, 1500 Grays Woods Boulevard, Port Matilda.
