CONCORD, NC — August 29, 2022 — (Motor Sports NewsWire) — The stakes are increasing for round two of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season at the zMAX Dragway as a crucial countdown to the championship win line begins at the upcoming Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals September 23-25.

It’s the second event in the six-race NHRA Playoffs, and the playoff action will add an extra intensity to the thrilling nitro action that the 11,000-horsepower Top Fuel and Funny Car machines will bring to the drag strip’s Bellagio to lend.

The crucial playoff showdown begins on Friday with a round of qualifying in conditions that could result in course records, two action-packed qualifying sessions on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday, as championship contenders in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock will try at zMAX Dragway to make it big.

Josh Hart (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Kyle Koretsky (Pro Stock) won last year’s playoff race. This season’s event will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 (FS1) as the standout players from the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series hope for an early win in the countdown to the Championship Playoffs at zMAX Dragway.

Hart’s outstanding rookie season in Top Fuel got even better in Charlotte, where he upset No. 1 qualifier Brittany Force in the final round to earn his second win in a wonderful debut campaign. Hart has continued to be solid in his sophomore season and he’ll be looking for another Charlotte win when he’s racing for a world championship for the first time. Force, meanwhile, is chasing a second world title and already has four wins to his name in 2022. She’s the league leader but there are plenty of worthy title contenders including four-time defending champion Steve Torrence, Mike Salinas who has also had four wins this year, Justin Ashley, Leah Pruett, eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher, Doug Kalitta, Antron Brown and Clay Millican.

Funny Car veteran Wilkerson was a thorn in everyone’s side a year ago when he clinched victory at Charlotte, beating out the likes of Bob Tasca III, John Force, Ron Capps and Cruz Pedregon. It was a memorable day for Wilkerson and he will try to recreate that moment against a packed Funny Car field. Everyone is chasing leaders Robert Hight, who has returned to form in 2022 after struggling last season. He has six wins this season to speed up the class including Matt Hagan who has three wins this year for Tony Stewart Racing, Defending Champion Capps, Tasca who has three wins in the last four races, JR Todd , Force, who won the spring race in Charlotte, and Alexis DeJoria.

Koretsky had a dream weekend in Charlotte last year and clinched his first career win in Pro Stock. He knocked out eventual World Champion Greg Anderson and denied Anderson a chance to set the all-time win mark in the class at the race. Anderson got that later in the year and now he’s trying to get his 100th career win. Both Koretsky and Anderson also claimed their first wins in a season dominated by championship leader Erica Enders. She has six wins so far in 2022 while teammates Aaron Stanfield and Troy Coughlin Jr. both have two, with Coughlin winning the last two races in the class. Others featured include Denver winner Matt Hartford, Dallas Glenn, rookie Camrie Caruso, Bo Butner and Mason McGaha.

The Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals also features exciting competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, which features some of the best drivers in the sport, as well as the FuelTech NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by D-Wagon. Jose Gonzalez won in Charlotte a year ago en route to his first world title in class. Fans in Charlotte can also enjoy the exciting Mountain Motor Pro Stock category as they bring their powerful 800+ cubic inch engines to the zMAX Dragway. On Saturday, fans can visit the Nitro School to learn more about how the cars work and achieve their blistering speeds.

Racing fans at the zMAX Dragway can enjoy special pre-race ceremonies that will introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and include the fan-favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final experience not to be missed at any NHRA event is Sunday’s Victory Circle Celebration after the conclusion of the race, where fans are invited to congratulate the winners of the Betway NHRA Carolina Nationals event.

As always, fans will also receive an exclusive pit pass to the world’s most powerful and sensual motorsport attraction in Charlotte. This unique opportunity gives fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see teams in action, service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers and more. Fans can also visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race providers create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, simulated competitions, merchandise, food and fun for the whole family. The new Pep Boys Midway display includes tire change challenges, oil change challenges, a slot car track and more, adding even more excitement to the Midway.

NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series qualifying includes one round on Friday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET and the final two qualifying rounds on Saturday, September 24 at 1:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled at 12:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 25th. Television coverage will include qualifying action on FS1 at 7pm ET Friday, 2pm Sunday and then the eliminations on FS1 at 3pm ET Sunday.
