What comes to mind when you think of Choteau?

To most Montanans, this quiet little town in Teton County is just another charming little town that happens to have a beautiful backdrop of the Rocky Mountain front. For others, it’s a stop on our infamous Dinosaur Trail that’s sure to be something to be proud of. But has it ever struck you that Choteau is the perfect gateway to a plethora of outdoor pursuits? This small town is a nature lover’s paradise.

In these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.

Choteau is located on US Routes 89 and 287 about 52 miles northwest of Great Falls.

Despite being an incredibly beautiful place, population growth here has been slow, largely due to its remote location.

Choteau is named for French fur trader, trader, and explorer Pierre Chouteau, Jr. Choteau County is also named for him.

The Teton County Courthouse, designed by architects Joseph B. Gibson and George H. Shanley, is one of the city’s highlights.

Living in Choteau means embracing small-town life, although there is much to see here.

For a town of this size, Choteau has many delicious restaurants, shops and bars. It is also a perfect base for a wealth of outdoor recreation.

The extensive Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest is easily accessible from Choteau.

Covering 2,912 square miles, the forest is an underrated treasure.

There is also quite a bit of hiking in the area.

The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest offers numerous hiking trails, such as the exciting 10-mile Clary Coulee Trail.

The 1.5 million acre Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is also just a short drive from Choteau.

This is the third largest wilderness complex in the lower 48 states. There is something for everyone here: fishing, hunting, hiking, swimming and more.

Choteau is less than two hours from Glacier National Park, but you don’t have to drive that far to experience Montana’s stunning outdoors at its best.

Just drive an hour or less in any direction and you’ll see what we mean.
