A popular Lanarkshire leisure facility is celebrating its first birthday this weekend with a special event competition.
Hamilton’s Hang On Climbing Center at Newcross Shopping Center – the first of its kind in the city – officially opened on May 11 last year.
Work on Lanarkshire’s largest bouldering center began back in 2020 after South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) approved plans to alter the former Argos retail unit within the centre.

Since opening it has proved to be a huge hit in the city, offering around 650 square meters of climbing walls and obstacles, a special children’s bouldering wall, an events room, associated changing rooms, seating areas and a café.
Director Doug Meyerhof told Lanarkshire Live: “The Hang On Climbing Center is celebrating our first anniversary since it opened in May 2021.
“In light of this achievement, we are holding a climbing competition on Saturday May 14 from 10am to 6pm.

“The competition will be held in two stages, a ‘fun’ competition for all, and an ‘open’ competition for the more competitive and experienced climbers.
“The open competition regularly attracts members of both Team GB Senior and Youth climbing teams, so the standard of climbing is excellent.
“There is a modest entry fee for the fun competition, but spectators for the final, which takes place between 4pm and 6pm, are admitted free. Please come and celebrate with us.”
