A 19-year-old man from Columbia Falls died yesterday after a climbing accident on Mount Brown in Glacier National Park, according to a National Park Service news release Wednesday afternoon.
Park wardens suspect Winslow Nichols fell while climbing and no foul play is suspected, the press release said.
Glacier National Park dispatchers received a missing persons notification from Nichols’ friend and climbing partner, who said he lost contact with Nichols around 3 p.m. on June 7. Park rangers launched a search using ground and air crews. Two Bear Air located Nichols’ body on Mount Brown at 7:00 p.m. the same day.
The circumstances leading to Nichols’ death are unknown, and the incident remains under investigation by rangers with the Glacier National Park Police Department.
Mount Brown’s summit is at 8,500 feet and current conditions are a mixture of snow and ice.
