DANVILLE, Va. – Danville City Council has delayed voting on an ordinance that would ban camping on city lots.
A vote was expected for Tuesday night’s city council meeting but was brought in unanimously, meaning it will be voted on at a later date.
The ordinance defines camping as sleeping on city streets, underpasses and sidewalks.
Council member James Buckner said the council decided to postpone the vote so they could get more information about the regulation and the people it affects.
A handful of people spoke out against the regulation at Tuesday’s meeting, saying it would disproportionately negatively affect people affected by homelessness.
“If a person is homeless under that bridge and they start a fire to keep warm, we’re concerned for those people, we’re concerned for the safety of those people who are lying there,” Mayor Alonzo Jones said.
A vote on the regulation has yet to be postponed.
