DEC Recreation Highlights: Give the Gift of an Adirondack Adventure and #LiveGreenNY

Looking for the perfect gift? Forget wrapping paper and bows. Instead, think outside the box and give away an Adirondack adventure instead of physical gifts. Need inspiration? If your recipient likes outdoor adventures, then they might enjoy going:

  • Hike – Give someone the gift of a day of quality time on the trail together. Choose a hike that suits the recipient and the weather, and remember to pack the 10 hiking essentials. Consider hiking the first day of December and get ready to enjoy the view.
  • watching birds – Gift a pair of binoculars or visit one of the many attractions along the New York State Birding Trail. Don’t forget to take photos and log the types of feathered friends you encounter.
  • fishing – Find the perfect fishing hole in Adirondack and go in search of the big one. Gift a Fishing Trip Voucher (PDF) to spend time with your favorite angler. Appropriate licenses are required and can also be a much appreciated gift. Check fishing regulations to ensure your catch is in season.
  • Rock and Ice Climbing – For those looking to soar to new heights, rock and ice climbing are physically and mentally demanding sports. The Adirondacks offer many challenging rock and ice routes. If you are new to this sport, consider hiring a New York State licensed guide.
  • driving a snowmobile – Snowmobiling in the Adirondacks offers the opportunity to enjoy a variety of trail experiences. Use DECinfo Locator to plan your route, remember protective gear, and bring your spirit of adventure with you.
  • Skiing and snowshoeing – In addition to skiing on public lands, the Adirondacks are home to several state-owned ski resorts. Your gift can include passes and rental of ski or snowshoe equipment. State skiing in the Adirondacks includes:

Now that you’re inspired, create your adventure list and double-check. For the perfect spot, check out DEC’s State Recreation Lands. If you don’t have equipment, consider renting or borrowing it.
