The man who took Dick’s Sporting Goods from a local retailer to a national chain shared his insights with some future business leaders.
Executive Chairman Ed Stack was the guest speaker for the Innovation Scholars program at Binghamton University yesterday.
The 3-year program teaches students how to solve business problems through guided learning projects and challenges.
Stack encouraged students to follow their passion and anticipate some bumps along the way.
He says Dick’s needs to evolve because companies that stagnate don’t survive.
“You need to keep innovating your business and thinking differently about your business, looking at the competitive landscape, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. We’re pretty confident that we can innovate in retail and especially in sports retail,” says Stack.
Stack is particularly proud of the company’s Sports Matter Foundation, which has reached over 1 million children across the country by supporting youth sports.
He says the company is considering opportunities to potentially expand its flagship store at Townsquare Mall in Vestal.
