CAMP WALKER, Republic of Korea — The U.S. Army’s Outdoor Recreational Program celebrates 50 years of supporting soldiers, civilians, and their families with activities and services that are focused on challenging healthy lifestyles.

More than 170 participants in Daegu have already registered for the peninsula-wide 1,000-kilometer bike challenge or the 500-kilometer hiking challenge. Nearby spots for outdoor enthusiasts include hiking the Bogyeongsa Waterfall Trail or cycling to the top of Paljoryeong Mountain.

Hiking and Biking Challenge participants can use a tracking app on their phone or GPS device to track distance and receive awards. The app must show the distance for each activity to match the distance of the cycling or hiking competition prize.

“Celebrate 50 years with us and sign up for the Hiking and Cycling Challenge today,” said Shawn Johnson, Daegu Family and MWR Supervisory Recreation Specialist. “Go outside and stay active. Come and find out where you can hike and ride the trails in South Korea. “

Participants have until August 31st.

Outdoor Recreation at Camp Walker gives you the opportunity to explore Korea’s vast wildlife and beauty on your own or through organized outdoor adventures. The Hana Travel Center also takes you on cultural tours ranging from the biggest festivals to the smallest hidden gems.

The first Outdoor Recreation, ODR, program was founded in 1971 and since then ODR has provided programs and services to military facilities around the world. ODR programs and activities offer a healthy alternative to traditional fitness offerings, building resilience and life skills for the entire army family.

With all of its offers, ODR enables soldiers and families to take time out from their normal environment, develop new skills and learn about lifelong leisure programs. ODR is a program for family and morals, welfare and recreation. FMWR is the G9 division of the US Army Installation Management Command.
