Ahead of the Delta 2022 National Sports Festival, the Edo Sports Associations under the Edo State Sports Commission have begun trials for athletes, with the Taekwondo and Athletics Associations selecting 32 and 70 athletes, respectively, for camping in preparation for the November 28, 2022 Delta Games to have.
The Taekwondo Association selected 32 athletes from both men’s and women’s weight classes after their highly competitive engagements at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
According to head coach Arthur Adjurin, the list of 32 athletes invited to camp will be reduced to sixteen after the camp test. He said that the top sixteen who will emerge after the camp trials will be Edo State’s representatives at the Delta State National Sports Festival.
Coach Adjorin revealed that his team organized trials for his athletes, that whoever produced the 32 for camping was the final portion of the trials in the third quarter.
“First and second athletes in each weight class qualify to camp and go to the final test at camp to get one person in each weight class, eight men and eight women, respectively.
Some of the successful athletes in martial arts are: Kabiru Momodu and Brian Osahenoma at male welterweight; Razak Musa and Aigbozena in the male lightweight. Others include Benjamin Okuomose and Olumuyiwa Tofunmi in the men’s heavyweight categories.
In the women’s division, Judith Usifoh and Esther Jegede succeeded at welterweight, while Ovbokhan Egbon and Favor Ugwu made it at lightweight.
Ameze and Divine Blessing chose the slots in the heavyweight category.
A total of seventy athletes have now been earmarked to camp in the Athletics Association after an eventful 2-day process at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
According to Edo Athletics Assistant Coach Sogbayi Ayopo, the process being organized for the selection of the Edo team for the Delta State National Sports Festival later this year will be completed during the final camping test, which is expected to reduce this Team through 48 that will represent the state.
Coach Ayopo said his team is working hard to topple track champions Delta, who dominated the 2020 Edo Games in Benin with 11 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze, while Edo prevailed with 9 gold, 6 silver and second place contented with 3 bronze medals.
The 2022 Delta Games have been postponed and will begin on November 28th and end on December 8th, 2022
