SHERWOOD, Wisconsin (WBAY) – High Cliff State Park is the site of the 2022 Wisconsin Tree Climbing Championship.
The weekend event is hosted by the Wisconsin Arborist Association. There are several disciplines among arborists, but the core of the industry is climbing trees for the care and maintenance of the city forest.
“We have a good handful of climbers who are participating for the first time this weekend, some stalwart climbers who have been climbing for a number of years are coming back. And then this year, I think we have four out-of-state contestants coming as guests to showcase some out-of-state talent as well,” said Mike Stanonik, chief technician for the climbing competition.
There will be five preparatory events testing a climber’s speed, rope access, maneuverability, air rescue techniques and safety.
The top contestants will advance to a Masters event on Saturday, then both a male and female climbing champion will be crowned.
The winner advances to the international competition in Montreal next year.
