FOLKSTON, Ga. (Gray News) — A Georgia angler is setting state and possibly world records with his latest catch.
That Georgian Ministry of Natural Resources Lester Roberts reportedly caught a robin sunfish that was over 11 inches long and weighed 1 lb, 12 ounces.
Georgia officials said Roberts hooked the fish on May 7 in the Satilla River near Folkston.
Native sunfish species in the Satilla River benefit from an ongoing control program that helps reduce the number of invasive flathead catfish in the region, according to the Department of Wildlife Resources.
State officials are reporting that Lester’s catch is awaiting a world record, replacing Georgia’s previous record set in 1998 for a fish that weighed 1 pound, 11 ounces.
