Flu hospitalizations, deaths proceed climbing in Minnesota

MDH’s report last week lists two new flu-related deaths, bringing the state’s total to seven for the season. A week earlier, the state had reported three new flu-related deaths, including the lonely child death.

Flu-related hospital admissions also rose for the fourth straight week, with 77 reported last week after 41 reported the previous week. A total of 166 flu-related hospital admissions have been reported in Minnesota so far this season.

Flu-related school outbreaks remained stable with 21 new reports in the last week, down slightly from 26 in the previous week. A total of 109 flu-related school outbreaks were reported in the state that year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still list Minnesota as one of the few states with “minimal” influenza activity, despite the recent surge in reports. However, neighboring states are seeing spikes in flu activity, particularly Iowa and North Dakota, which are categorized as moderate to high.
