Powell County Search and Rescue responded to a call for a hiker attempting to climb the ferrata

POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — A person injured while rock climbing in the Red River Gorge had to be flown by helicopter to a trauma center. According to Powell County Search and Rescue, the team was responding to a call about a hiker attempting to scale the rock scramble to get to the Indian Staircase. After reaching the top of the scramble, the patient fell about 30 feet and bounced off the rocks.

According to search teams, the Powell County Emergency Medical Services responded and dispatched a team into the woods to help the patient. A trauma assessment revealed injuries that would require intervention.

Members of the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team and Lee County Search and Rescue Team, along with PCSAR, provided personnel and rope equipment to safely get the patient out of the woods. Red STAR Wilderness EMS provided advanced wilderness medicine to the patient.

According to rescue workers, a decision was made to fly the patient to a trauma center by helicopter. The patient is expected to make a full recovery, according to Powell County Search and Rescue.
