There was a special moment after the final whistle in the second leg of the CCL Finals when Frei celebrated with Club Director of Goalkeeping Tom Dutra and fellow goalkeepers Stefan Cleveland and Andrew Thomas. Cleveland performed exceptionally last year during Frei’s lengthy injury layoff and could be a starter elsewhere in the league, while Thomas is a bright young goaltender.
Due in large part to the consistency of Sounder’s original Dutra, the club continue to have one of the best goalkeeping groups in MLS.
“That’s all,” Frei said of the goalkeepers’ relationships. “There might be some goalkeepers who prefer to be No 1 with a really big backlog behind them. But between us, we’ve always been aware that the whole corps has to be very, very good to be successful. We have to push each other every day and grow stronger together as a unit. That’s why we share the success together, regardless of who is playing on the field at those moments.”
