Man hooks first King Mackerel for 2022 season on Okaloosa Island Pier

Okaloosa Island, Fla. (currency) — Okaloosa Island Pier regular Philip Morris snapped Sunday afternoon with the right Sunday afternoon in first king mackerel for the 2022 season.

The first angler to snap a king mackerel wins a free annual fishing pass to the pier.

Morris caught the 23.4-pound fish on Sunday afternoon, just day two of the annual Spring Saltwater Showdown tournament.

“The man nothing beats the first fish of the year, especially since it was worth an annual entry pass to the pier. The best thing about fishing here at the pier is getting out here and fishing with the other local anglers I consider family. Special thanks to Isaac who provided the fish for me, it was a clean stick and it couldn’t have been done better! “

General manager Eric Brown said there have been close calls over the past few weeks. In the first King Mackrel of the season, it’s always a big event on the island.

The first king mackerel is always exciting for us, it really starts our season. We’ve had dozens of missed opportunities over the past few weeks so it had to happen every day! We love the fact one of our tough locals, Phil was able to land her! It was even better that this fish was landed at the start of our spring mackerel tournament which we partnered with Half Hitch Tackle (Destin). Details on this on our Facebook page. There is one more annual pass area to claim and that is the pier fisherman’s unicorn, Cobia!

Brown said Morris nearly brought up two kingmakerels on Sunday, but the second came away.

The Saltwater Showdown Tournament will run for seven weeks through May 21st.
