Massive South Fork providing one free tenting evening on Monday


ONEIDA, Tenn. (AP) – Visitors to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area can enjoy a free night of camping to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on Monday.

The park says they are approving one night of free camping at Alum Ford Campground.

The campsite is on the edge of the Big South Fork River on the Kentucky side of the park. There are six campsites with grills, picnic tables, and lantern hooks. There are also barrier-free vault toilets. The Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail runs through the campsite.

Free camping also applies to all backcountry camping permits in the Kentucky and Tennessee areas of the park.

Other toll-free days for 2022 are April 16, the first day of National Park Week; August 4th, anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act; August 25, National Park Service birthday; September 24, National Public Land Day; November 11th and 11th, Veterans Day.
