The City of Sanibel is conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the Recreation Department’s facilities and programs — the Sanibel Recreation Center, Center4Life, and outdoor sports programs — with the goal of rethinking all components to meet the recreational needs of youth, adults, and seniors.
Public participation is a key component of the study, and community participation in both the in-person and online tools was impressive, officials reported. As of April 22, more than 350 people had personally contributed, while nearly 300 surveys had been completed online and over 300 individual comments posted online.
All are invited to participate, including year-round and seasonal Sanibel residents (owners and renters), island workers, island entrepreneurs, and members of island nonprofit organizations.
To gather more input, the city has extended the window for online participation to May 11.
Officials reported that there was a community conversation online with suggestions for improving customer service, providing more family and multigenerational activities, extending hours of operation, opening all pools, upgrading equipment and technology, expanding the weight room and Providing a wider range of classes and instructors, providing outdoor pickleball courts, how best to meet the needs of the elderly population and much more.
There are tools on the “Social Point” Community engagement platform developed for the project. The community is encouraged to participate in all four of the following actions “boxes”:
– TAKE THE SURVEY: “SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS”
The survey asks questions about usage (present and past) of the department’s various facilities, programs, and activities. It consists of multiple choice options focused on experiences. Once a poll has been submitted, the next three boxes provide an opportunity to comment and share any comments or suggestions for improvement. Estimated time to complete the survey is approximately 10 minutes; only one submission per person (per email address).
– INVESTMENTS OF THE FUTURE
If the city could invest in a change to the recreation department, what would it be?
– OPERATION OF LEISURE DEPARTMENT FACILITIES
Share thoughts and ideas to improve operations.
– IDEA WALL: “LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD”
The Wall of Ideas offers an opportunity to have an interactive community conversation centered around six thematic areas: Customer Service, Parks and Facilities, Program Educators, Family Activities, Senior Activities, and Youth Activities.
For the forum questions and idea wall, attendees can post as many ideas and comments as they like, and they can come back multiple times from now until May 11th to join the interactive conversation. Comments remain anonymous and are posted on the site for others to see, reply with a thumbs up or down, and encourage others to join the conversation. After May 11th, comments will be available on the website for the duration of the project.
