Metropolis internet hosting free, ‘family-fun’ indoor and outside actions

Recreation Month is a “great way to emphasize the importance of getting active…and enjoying all of the excellent recreational opportunities that Orillia offers,” says the mayor

Get active in Orillia – for free! The month of June is the month of rest and parks.

The city will host a variety of free, family-friendly indoor and outdoor activities highlighting the city’s programs and the various outdoor amenities available to the community throughout the month of June.

“Orillia is fortunate to have many beautiful parks and wonderful recreational services, and during Recreation and Parks Month in June these combine into a wealth of free and fun events,” said Mayor Steve Clarke.

“The Recreation and Parks Month initiative has been scaled back for the last two years due to COVID-19 and I am very excited to see the full range of activities this year. It’s a great way to emphasize the importance of activity for our physical and mental health and to enjoy all the excellent recreational opportunities that Orillia has to offer.”

JRPM is a movement that aims to promote the physical, social, and environmental health benefits of recreation and parks. Communities across Ontario use JRPM to promote the programs they offer and parks and facilities available to all citizens. Attendance at events is free and first come, first served. Pre-registration is not required.

Some of the events taking place this year are:

  • scavenger hunt – Explore Orillia in search of hidden treasures using secret clues from the Recreation and Youth Services Division’s social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Every Monday in June, an indication of where a message in a bottle is hidden is posted on social media. This event starts on June 6, 2022 and lasts all month.
  • Warehouse open day – Children and young people aged four to 16 are invited to meet the Orillia Recreation and Youth Services Day Camp team and participate in a fun-filled afternoon of exploration, adventure and activities galore! This event will take place on June 25, 2022 from 12pm to 4pm at Couchiching Beach Park.
  • Water Smart Day – Designed to educate the community on drowning prevention strategies, residents will enjoy water safety presentations, instructional videos, handouts and lifeguard demonstrations. There will also be free games, face painting and more. This event will take place on June 25, 2022 from 12pm to 4pm at Couchiching Beach Park.
  • spike ball – Spikeball is a fun and active two-on-two sports game with rules similar to volleyball. Join us at Moose Beach for a fun tutorial on how to play! This event will take place on June 20, 2022 from 7pm to 8pm at Moose Beach.
  • babies in the park – Come out for some socializing for you and your little one! Meet new people and enjoy nature. This event will take place on June 14, 2022 from 9am to 9:30am at Homewood Park.

“We are so excited to be able to offer another month of free activities to celebrate the month of June! There is something for all ages and all interests,” said Megan Visser, Recreation Program Supervisor. “With beautiful weather right on our doorstep, this is a great opportunity to see what the city has to offer while enjoying activities that get you out of the house and enjoying our amazing amenities.”
