Volunteers built the outdoor boundaries of Edwards’ ice rink last December during a meeting that was attended by more than three dozen workers. We are again looking for volunteers to build this year’s ice rink.

Mountain Recreation is bringing back the Edwards outdoor ice rink for the entire community for the 2021-2022 winter season, but it needs your help.
Over the past few weeks, the district staff has begun foundation work to create a safe and level platform in the Edwards Field House parking lot. The district is now looking for volunteers to help with initial ice building and training. Depending on the weather, the ice rink is expected to open on Friday, December 17th.
“I am grateful that this year we can again contribute to offering this incredible community good. I don’t think we saw a day last year when the rink was idle, “said Brad Johnson, Edwards Facility Supervisor at Mountain Rec.” This rink kept our community active, it provided our community with an unsafe and restrictive environment Last year’s pandemic provided much-needed connection, hope and an endless smile. I can’t wait to see everyone back on the ice soon. “
The first build this Friday and the following week will require all hands-on decks as additional work is required adding shifts each morning early and each evening to create a safe ice base. To volunteer, please visit MountainRec.org to fill out the volunteer form. The district thanks Tom Boyd for organizing volunteers for the second year in a row.
“This year, like last year, we received great support from partner organizations, sponsors and the community to make all of this possible. I’m very excited to lead this effort and it was special to see our community build and maintain the ice rink. to ultimately participate in shaping our community year after year. This is the community’s ice rink, ”Boyd said.
The outdoor ice rink can be used free of charge by everyone and is open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m. Mountain Rec will continue to have a free selection of ice skates thanks to sponsorships and local donations, as well as a full range of hockey equipment thanks to the Colorado Avalanche Alumni Association. To donate lightly used equipment, please visit Edwards Field House.
To meet community demand, the district is currently planning and collecting for the 2022-2023 winter season to relocate the outdoor ice rink to the sports fields in the northeast of Freedom Park. The move would enable several and larger ice rinks for freestyle and hockey. To support this endeavor, the community can make a donation by visiting MountainRecreationFoundation.org.
Mountain Recreation also thanks sponsors for supporting Edwards’ outdoor ice rink, which is fun for everyone: Vail Valley Foundation, Vail Honeywagon, Edwards Metro District, Singletree, and the Vail Mountaineers Hockey Club.
