New Longview recreation middle to open its doorways in November

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) – The city of Longview is giving a sneak peek at its new recreation center. The new Broughton Recreation Center will open its doors to the public on November 7th.

This project started in 2015 as a comprehensive plan. A bond proposal was accepted by the public in 2018 and construction began in 2021.

The $6 million building is a significant upgrade from the previous facility, which was constructed in 1978. This new space includes a fully equipped fitness center, new basketball courts, an in-house library, and an updated outdoor recreation area for public events.

Longview Parks and Recreation director Scott Karon said he hopes the upgraded center will offer more space for residents and give people something to be proud of.

“We want to create that social space, that sense of community, that community pride, an area where they know they’re welcome. Areas they can create, they can learn, they can learn and they can be healthy,” Karon said.

The new facility on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard has multiple rooms and plenty of space, which Karon said allows multiple events to take place simultaneously.

Longview Parks and Recreation will host a dedication ceremony on opening day to celebrate the city’s great achievement.
