November woes start: Delhi AQI enters crimson zone, climbing | Newest Information India

Pollution in the capital entered the red zone on Tuesday, and weather experts warned that if the ban on the use of fireworks is ignored, it will only worsen and potentially fall from “very bad” to “severe”.

According to the bulletin, the air quality index (AQI) was 303 at 4:00 p.m. and thus exceeded the threshold from bad to very bad for the first time this season. Over the next few days, wind directions are likely to change to include smoke from farm fires that recently raged across parts of Punjab and Haryana.

An analysis by a government forecasting body on Wednesday found that these two factors alone are enough to keep pollution levels in the upper “very bad” range – the AQI is likely to be in the high 300 in this case – as long as people don’t burst any fireworks Diwali on Thursday.

But if people burn even half the amount of fireworks they put together in 2019, the AQI will fall into the heavy category, according to the Systems of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) forecast.

“We identified three factors that could play a role around Diwali – the stubble fire that burst on the 5th. If no fireworks burst the air in Delhi will be very bad, but even if some fireworks are added the air could be pushed into the ‘heavy’ area, ”said Gufran Beig, founder and project manager at SAFAR.

The analysis added that “the AQI is expected to enter the severe category from the night of November 4th (Thursday) and remain strictly in the severe range through November 5th”.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai said the Delhi government had issued instructions to increase vigilance across the city to control the sale, purchase and burning of fireworks. Rai said 12,957 kg of fireworks had been seized by Delhi police as of Tuesday and 32 people had been booked since Oct. 27.

“A special vigilance campaign would be carried out in the border area of Delhi to ensure that there is no illegal purchase, sale, movement or storage of fireworks anywhere. In this regard, instructions were given to the Delhi Police and the SDM today on behalf of the DPCC, ”Rai said.

The last time Delhi’s AQI slipped into the “very poor” zone was on June 9, when the AQI was 305 after strong, dusty winds blew into Delhi from the desert in Rajasthan.

Winter pollution, however, is a more persistent problem due to a perfect storm of factors: the typical meteorological conditions, characterized by low temperatures and no wind, prevent local pollutants from dust, smoke and tailpipe emissions from being dispersed and bring farm fires in Punjab and Haryana Ultra- fine particles that emerged as smoke.

The first half of November is particularly bad every year – there were nine days of severe category air pollution in 2020, six of them between November 5th and 11th.

Pawan Gupta, a researcher at Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research (GESTAR), Universities Space Research Association, shared satellite imagery with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and said a thick layer of smoke and dust had been seen in parts of northern India on Tuesday morning.

Ashim Mitra of the India Meteorological Department’s satellite division also said that dense haze was captured via satellite imagery on Tuesday morning. Forecasts suggest that air quality in Delhi, Punjab and parts of Uttar Pradesh is expected to deteriorate further between November 5th and 6th.

A SAFAR analysis of the day’s pollution suggested that Tuesday’s deterioration was mainly due to local pollution sources and Delhi weather conditions. The proportion of pollutants from farm fires was 6%, but would increase to 20-40% between November 4th and 6th.

The Decision Support System of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune also showed that the share of stubble fires in the pollution of Delhi is expected to reach around 55% by November 6th.

But there can also be some silver lining. Mahesh Palawat, Vice President (Meteorology and Climate Change), said that an increase in wind speed is forecast from November 5th. he said.
