Out of doors recreation alternatives abound in Fort Morgan – The Fort Morgan Instances

As the seasons change and warmer weather approaches, it’s no surprise that people get more and more excited about going outside. There may already be a summer vacation planned or you may be wondering what activities to take part in on hot summer days and nights. Whether you are near or far, Fort Morgan, Colorado has plenty of outdoor recreation options so you can have fun outdoors in the sun!

Fort Morgan City Recreational Superintendent Steve Samson has headed the department for the past three years. When it comes to outdoor recreational events held during the summer for local community members and visitors to the area, Samson has some recommendations.

With COVID-19 restrictions, Samson said the Recreation Department is following restrictions based on the guidelines of the other local Recreation departments. For example, they encourage those who sign up for the youth football program to use best practices and maintain social distancing as much as possible.

“We were very aware of the restrictions and made sure to keep things clean and hygienic,” said Samson. Given the progress made with the vaccine over the past few months, Fort Morgan’s Recreation Department is trying to get things back to normal for the upcoming summer season.

Organized recreation

Organized recreational events must be planned one season in advance.

swimming lessons

Swimming lessons in the community center pool at Riverside Park are extremely popular and fill up quickly. There are a variety of lessons, ranging from group lessons to private lessons, available for both children and adults. The summer session for swimming lessons starts on June 1, 2021 and ends in the first week of August.

Baseball and softball

Baseball and softball leagues are very popular for organized sporting events during the summer months. With an abundance of fields in the leisure center, it’s easy to host multiple games or tournaments.

Riverside Park

“Riverside Park is the largest park in town,” said Samson. It contains seven baseball and softball fields, a hiking trail, and a disc golf course. The disc golf course is very popular and is open to the public all year round, especially in summer.

Twamore Trail

“On the other side of Rainbow Bridge, north of it, is the Twamore Trail,” said Samson. With grants from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, this new rustic trail network was recently developed and is a great place for outdoor recreation. The Twamore Trail runs along both the north and south ends of the Platte River.

Thursday night live

“We play a band every Thursday night all summer,” said Samson. This is one of their favorite activities for the leisure center and a huge hit with the community. The concerts take place from the beginning of June to the end of July.

movie night

“We also have our movie nights where we have our big inflatable movie screen in the field,” said Samson. This is a great way to spend those hot summer nights. Bring your garden chairs, outdoor blankets, and your favorite snacks and watch a movie outside.
