Planning weekend tenting journeys may very well be onerous this season, says park officers

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Planning a weekend camping trip could be difficult this season as more people get outdoors.

Amelia Hulth, deputy park manager for the administration, said the number of people enjoying the great outdoors has increased recently.

“Camping has definitely become one of the most popular activities, and with the weather we’re seeing this spring, we’re also seeing increased reservations, especially on weekends,” she said.

Nearly a million people visited Pocahontas State Park last year, and staff don’t expect those numbers to slow anytime soon.

According to the Virginia State Parks website, campgrounds at Powhatan and Pocahontas State Parks tend to be fully booked on weekends during the summer.

Memorial Day and the Fourth of July holiday always bring large numbers of campers, and at Pocahontas State Park these holiday weekends already fill up, Hulth said.

The park has about 121 campsites.

There are 29 of the 41 state parks in Virginia that have campgrounds, totaling over 1600 campgrounds across the state.

Hulth said families should plan a camping trip months in advance or camp during the week.

“You might see at some of our more popular parks that we’ve increased our visits to our campgrounds,” she said. “If you’re coming on the weekend you may have trouble finding a reservation, but if you have the flexibility to camp during the week we usually have campsites available Monday through Thursday.”
