Shively Sporting Items closing Dixie Freeway retailer after greater than 50 years | Enterprise

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – After more than 50 years, Shively Sporting Goods is closing its store on Dixie Highway and Crums Lane.

The family business has been taken over by BSN Sports and is liquidating its longstanding business, according to a tweet Saturday from the Shively Sporting Goods account.

“Thank you to everyone in the community who brought back the great memories that our business has been part of for over 52 years,” said another tweet from the account. “This was an emotional week for everyone involved.”

BSN Sports plans to build a 1,500 square foot showroom that will house the store’s current warehouse. In the showroom, coaches can design logos and uniforms for their teams.

Current Shively Sporting Goods employees said the acquisition had been discussed for nearly 10 years. A tweet from the company stated that the sales force and “some of our support staff” will merge with BSN Sports.

“While it’s a sad day locally that we will run out of business in the near future, our customers, our sales reps, Shively (and) everyone at BSN Sports have gotten a lot stronger now,” said Robby Wine, Shively Sporting Goods’ Sales manager. “It enables us to go into the future.”

The store is offering a 50% liquidation sale for the next week. It will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., “mixed with some Saturdays,” according to a tweet.

Bob Flanders founded Shively Sporting Goods in 1968, according to his website, and the company grew to become “Kentucky’s largest and oldest independent sporting goods retailer”.

Flemish children Trish Morrison Kall and Mike Flanders took over their father’s business and are currently co-owners.
