PHOENIX – A Midwestern sporting goods salesman plans to open one of his huge, attraction-filled stores in a Chandler mall in two years.

North Dakota’s employee-owned Scheels announced on Wednesday that it will take over the former Nordstrom at the Chandler Fashion Center and is expected to open in fall 2023.

Nordstrom closed in August 2020, citing coronavirus setbacks.

The new store will occupy 220,000 square feet in the mall near Loop 101 and Chandler Boulevard.

The retailer said in a press release that its first store in Arizona will feature a 16,000-gallon saltwater aquarium and over 600 fish, interactive arcade games, a wildlife mountain, and a coffee shop serving gourmet sandwiches and soups, homemade fudge, and specialty coffees.

“Scheels will be a great convenience to this family-friendly market,” said Ed Coppola, president of mall operator Macerich.

The Chandler business will employ around 400 people.

“After looking into the Phoenix market for several years, we are pleased to announce that the first Scheels location is coming to Arizona,” said CEO Steve M. Scheel. “We are very excited to be part of the Chandler Fashion Center.”

The chain has 29 stores and one more opening in Montana this fall.
