CALUMET TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) — A Houghton County trail network and outdoor rental company joined forces Sunday afternoon to give people a chance to try something new.
The Swedetown Nordic Ski Trails Club teamed up with Cross Country Sports from Calumet, who provided the equipment. Swedetown has 1,900 acres of walking trails and recreational space.
“This is an annual day and it’s a national event across the country, including at other Nordic ski resorts. It’s a way of giving people the opportunity to try a winter sport,” said Swedetown Trails Club volunteer Cynthia Macdonald. “A way to stay active in winter, something new.”
According to Macdonald, working with cross-country skiers helps enthusiasts find a passion for the outdoors.
“This is so great; It’s so nice to have a gear store that’s only a half mile away where they can rent the gear and people can come over and help people become winter trail enthusiasts,” said Macdonald.
Cross Country Sports Manager Ryan Bischer says he is happy to introduce winter recreation to the participants.
“It really means a lot to us to have the expertise and share the experience with everyone when they start winter sports,” said Bischer.
Bischer says that not only is it fun to hit the trail, but it’s also good for your health.
“I love winter sports and going out,” says Bischer. “I feel like enjoying the winter and not just shoveling and pushing snow has a positive impact on our lives. It’s something to look forward to and a way to get some exercise in the winter.”
Macdonald says she hopes to continue the event next year.
