Tales for Good: Winona Out of doors Collaborative

As the season rolls on and the serenity of winter settles in, the staff at the Winona Outdoor Collaborative are filled with gratitude for another incredible year and for the generous community that has supported it.

2022 was the second year of operation for the Winona Outdoor Collaborative and a record year for the organization. The collaboration served approximately 650 people in Winona County and beyond through their outdoor programming and equipment rental services. All programs aim to break down barriers associated with going outdoors and the collaboration was thrilled to see such a diverse range of participants enjoying their programmes.

“We’ve seen a lot of new faces in programs and in our business this year, which is great,” said Alexa Shapiro, Executive Director. “We want to be a community home – where people feel comfortable and welcome, regardless of their experience or ability. It has been so rewarding to see our small organization grow in this way, where we see many new faces and can really focus on building a community that gives us a sense of connection to nature.”

This year also marked the grand opening of Basecamp Provisions and Driftless Thrift, made possible through a partnership with Sanborn Canoe Company. Basecamp Provisions is an affordable gear rental on the west end of Winona near 41st Avenue, and Driftless Thrift offers quality, affordable, second-hand outdoor clothing and gear for sale.

All of these efforts support the collaboration’s mission to break down barriers to accessing recreation to create a more inclusive nature.

The collaboration would also like to thank the entire Winona community for their incredible support this year. Throughout 2022, the collaboration not only met, but exceeded the fundraising and grant goals it set at the beginning of the year. The collaboration received a number of significant grants from local organizations including the Winona Community Foundation, Department of Natural Resources, Elizabeth Callender King Foundation, Gundersen Health Systems and the Statewide Health Initiative Partnership. As a small non-profit organization, these dollars were tremendous for the collaboration and secured their ability to continue providing free and low-cost services and programs throughout calendar year 2023.

The collaboration is excited to continue to care for the Winona community to create a more welcoming nature for all and they hope to see you at the track soon in 2023.
