Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like listening to the birds chirping and the wind whistling through the trees as you relax and enjoy the verdant scenery while sipping your morning coffee by the campfire, or gaze at the starry sky while enjoy an evening cocktail.
So if you want to get away from it all, enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature and camp, Lake Ogawarako in Misawa has several campgrounds to choose from.
Of course, if you’re based at Misawa Air Base, you know that campgrounds and cabins are available at beautiful Base Beach. But there are also other campsites, outdoor facilities and dozens of hot springs just outside the gates.
Among the campsites in the area, Lake Ogawarako Fureai Village and Ogawarako Lakeside Campsite are two of the most popular and offer large campsites, beautiful wooden bungalows, and kitchen, shower and bathroom facilities.
“The early summer season is ideal for camping and there are no harmful insects to bother us while camping,” says Yoshihito Morita of the Misawa Air Base Commissary.
You can enjoy a great view of Lake Ogawarako while camping. Lakeside Campsite faces west and offers beautiful views of the sunset over the lake. Get a bird’s-eye view of the Air Force Base Control Tower from a viewing platform in Fureai Village.
In the town of Tohokucho on the west side of the lake, there are 12 natural onsen spas for 100-330 yen (0.75-$3). You can’t beat the views while bathing in the hot springs.
Nearby, Road Station Lake Ogawarako sells fresh vegetables, various souvenirs and handicrafts, and also houses a restaurant serving dishes made from local produce.
