Memorial Day weekend camping destinations around Arizona
Memorial Day is often the prelude to summer. If you want to camp over the long weekend, where can you go? Desiree Fluellen of FOX 10 speaks to Michelle Thompson of Arizona State Parks and Trails about popular destinations.
PHOENIX – – For those who still want to camp this Memorial Day weekend, it may be too late to camp in Arizona’s most popular state parks.
“We’re really full for this weekend,” said Michelle Thompson of Arizona State Parks. “Many of our parks fill up very quickly because you can reserve up to a year in advance.”
However, day trips are still a great option for the vacation weekend.
“I would recommend day trips to some of our parks,” said Thompson. “Just hang out for the day, hike, maybe enjoy the water.”
For those looking to get away from the heat, the best option is to go north.
“We have parks in northern Arizona that get cooler. Red Rock State Park, Jerome State Historic Park, and Dead Horse Ranch State Parks are all in northern central Arizona,” Thompson said.
Camping facilities are still available for the summer.
“If you’re looking for a cooler place, Lyman Lake State Park in St. John near Greer, White Mountains is a really nice park,” Thompson said.
For those lucky enough to be camping this weekend, officials say they should be aware of the fire restrictions.
