One of the funnest things people can experience is driving on a road trip to visit different campsites. While this can be a fun thing to do in the summer, people need to do some mundane things first, like packing the right amount of camping gear and having a way to safely transport it. Here’s a look at four tips for packing gear to help keep your autocamping adventure going and safe.

1. Loading boxes on the roof

According to Erie Insurance, some campers may be tempted to pack too much luggage in their car. This is unsafe as it may affect your rearward vision. Instead, there are some options that adventurous people can do instead. One of them is using a rooftop cargo box.

The rooftop cargo box market is diverse and there are many different cargo boxes that can meet your needs. They are usually big enough to carry a lot of camping gear. The boxes are also mostly waterproof and have a lock. That being said, some people may need to purchase more than one cargo box. The car’s roof rails also require crossbars to ensure the cargo box is secured to the roof, and these crossbars can cost extra.

One downside to rooftop cargo boxes is that they can cost hundreds of dollars, depending on what cargo box a driver purchases. That might be too expensive for some people or just not worth the investment. An alternative are roof luggage bags. They are very similar to rooftop cargo boxes in that they provide owners with a rooftop storage facility.

Unlike cargo boxes, cargo bags are typically much cheaper but offer similar loading capacity. Plus, when you’re not using them, it’s easier to stow a soft cargo bag than it is to find a spot for a hard cargo box. However, there are downsides to being cheaper. The big deal is that soft cargo bags may not be as waterproof as a hard cargo box.

3. Hitch mounted cargo carriers

Another way to haul more camping gear is with hitch-mounted load carriers. These are usually boxes that attach to your car’s trailer hitch. Companies typically offer a fully-enclosed cargo box or open-top shipping case that allows owners to store things like a cargo bag or cooler inside.

One benefit of this option is fuel economy, as a roof-top cargo box or bag reduces a car’s fuel economy more than a trailer hitch-mounted cargo truck. However, campers wishing to use this option should be aware of the weight limit of their car’s hitch and the load they can carry.

4. Trailers are great gear packing tips

People who go on very long camping trips or camping trips with a lot of people may want to consider going all out and getting a trailer. Even a small camping trailer can greatly improve your cargo capacity, allowing you to haul all the gear you might need.

These trailers weigh a lot, so it’s also important to know if the car can tow such a heavy load. However, trailers come in all shapes and sizes, and for camping, there are some small and cheap trailers that people can buy or rent.
