Well, the cool thing about all this cold weather is that our outdoor pop-up ice rinks in the Hudson Valley are operational.

Just today the City of Newburgh’s Leisure Department at Chadwick Lake said they have set up their ice rink and are awaiting a deep freeze. They expect it to open soon due to our dropping temperatures.

If you grew up in the Hudson Valley, it’s likely your first experience of ice skating on a frozen pond in winter. There is something about open air ice skating that makes it more exciting than an ice rink. Of course, if you plan to skate on a pond or lake, you need to make sure you follow safety precautions.

How do you know if ice is frozen enough to walk on?

Cities like Newburgh and others have come up with a way to enjoy the feel of skating outdoors without the risk of being out on a pond or lake. Various communities have set up outdoor pop-up ice rinks for skaters of all ages. Once the Chadwick Lake ice rink freezes, you’re free to enjoy it. The Dutchess County Parks Department at Bowdin Park also set up a temporary ice rink.
